PasoとBUILDING BLOCKによる初のコラボレーション
両ブランドに共通する“かたちの美しさ”と“日常に寄り添う機能性”を軸に、ジュエリーとプロダクトの境界を探る2型のアイテムが誕生

ブランドについて教えてください。また、現在のプロジェクト（店舗やコラボレーションなど）についてもお聞かせください。

Could you introduce your brand and tell us about current project ?(store, collaboration etc)

(BB) BUILDING BLOCKは、Kimberly WuとNancy Wuによって始められたデザインプロジェクトです。インダストリアルデザインのバックグラウンドを持つ姉妹は、日常的なアクセサリーやバッグを改めて見つめ直し、素材そのものの本質を際立たせることを意図して、2011年にブランドを設立しました。
2023年には、これまで主軸としていたファッションの領域から、より関心を寄せてきた“住まい”の領域へと活動の重心を移しています。
Building Blockは今後も、小規模ながらバッグの制作やコラボレーションを継続していきますが、その一方でKimとNancyは、「Building Block Etcetera（通称：BB Etc.）」という新たなプロジェクトを通じて、暮らしにまつわるアイテムの制作やキュレーションへと軸足を移しています。

BB Etc.は現在、アメリカ・ロサンゼルスを拠点としたセレクトショップというかたちで展開されています。「Etcetera」という言葉が“続き”や“その他のもの”を意味するように、このショップはBuilding Blockの視覚的・素材的な言語を拡張し、スタジオで制作された作品や機能的なプロダクト、そして暮らしに寄り添うアイテムを織り交ぜたキュレーション空間となっています。
KimとNancyにとってBB Etc.は、自らが完結して構築する固定的なデザイン言語ではなく、オブジェクト、アイデア、そして用途がゆるやかに連なり続ける、変化し続ける場です。そこには、新たで自由度の高い創造のあり方が広がっています。

 

Building Block is a design project initiated by Kimberly and Nancy Wu. With backgrounds in industrial design, the sisters established the brand  in 2011 with the intention of readdressing everyday accessories and bags, bringing elemental materials to the forefront of their designs. In 2023, Kim and Nancy shifted their primary focus from the fashion world towards a continuing interest in the home sphere.
Although Building Block  will continue to produce some bags in small quantities as well as participate in small collaborations at a quiet pace, Kim and Nancy have moved their efforts towards producing and curating items for the home life through a new project called Building Block Etcetera (BB Etc. for short). BB Etc. currently takes the form of a select shop based in Los Angeles, California. The word Etcetera means a continuation or “and other things”, and so the store extends the visual and material language of Building Block into a curated environment featuring studio-made works, functional goods, and selected items for the home and life. For Kim and Nancy, instead of a fixed language of designs that they establish completely themselves, BB Etc. is an evolving arrangement of objects, ideas, and utility that allows for a new and exciting type of creative freedom.

 

 

(Paso) Pasoは、彫金家・デザイナー川畑亜由美が2015年に立ちあげたジュエリーブランドです。
Paso（パソ）は少人数の職人による自社制作体制のもとクラフトメイドの質感ながらもソリッドで洗練されたデザインを特徴とし、スタンダードかつニュートラルなジュエリーを展開しています。
日常に自然と溶け込み、それぞれのライフスタイルに寄り添うジュエリーを提案しています。
2019年ブランド初となる直営店を南青山にオープン。2024年より、ブライダルリングといった特別なリングのセミオーダーメイド注文が可能なfine jewelry series「aru」がスタートし、南青山直営店にて、限定でセミオーダーメイドの受注を行っています。

 

Paso is a jewelry brand founded in 2015 by metalsmith and designer Ayumi Kawabata.
Produced in-house by a small team of artisans, Paso is characterized by its balance of handcrafted texture and refined, solid design. The brand offers standard yet neutral jewelry pieces that are both timeless and understated.
Designed to naturally blend into everyday life, Paso proposes jewelry that gently accompanies and adapts to each individual’s lifestyle.
In 2019, the brand opened its first flagship store in Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo.In 2024, Paso launched its fine jewelry series “aru,” which offers semi-custom orders for special pieces such as bridal rings. These semi-custom orders are available exclusively at the Minami-Aoyama flagship store.

それぞれのブランドが大切にしている“核”となる考えを教えてください。

What is the core philosophy behind your work?

(BB) Building Blockの核となる考え方は、形・素材・プロセス、そして遊び心にあります。

 

Building Block’s core philosophy as a brand is rooted in form, material, process and play.

 

 

(Paso) ジュエリーと人との関係性がよりフラットになる状態を目指しています。ライフスタイル、ニュートラル、バランス、間、余白といった要素を大切にしています。

 

In creating jewelry, we aim for a state where the relationship between the object and the wearer becomes neutral—almost invisible. Our work is guided by ideas of lifestyle, balance, space, and subtlety.

PasoとBuilding Blockとの出会いを教えてください。

Could you tell us how Paso and Building Block first met or knew?

(BB) Pasoのことは、共通の友人である彩子さんと、長年のパートナーであるDuneショールームを通して知りました。私たち自身もPasoのジュエリーを愛用しており、個人的にもファンです。

 

We first became aware of Paso through our mutual friend Ayako Shimada, and our long time partners at Dune showroom. We each own jewelry from Paso and are personal fans!

 

 

(Paso) 実は、十数年前に南青山のセレクトショップで働いていたことがあり、私にとってBuilding Blockとの出会いはその時が最初でした。当時は接客業もほとんど初めてで、KimとNancyのプロフィールを何度も何度も練習していたことを、今でもよく覚えています。
Pasoとしての大きな転機となったのが、セレクトショップNid、そしてDUNEショールームとの出会いでした。憧れであり、長年のファンでもあったBuilding Blockと同じショールームに立てたことは、とても特別で、心から嬉しい経験でした。
そして今回、Pasoでも一緒にお仕事している彩子さんがこの機会をつないでくれました。このご縁に心より感謝しています。

 

More than ten years ago, I worked at a select shop in Minami-Aoyama, where I first encountered Building Block. At the time, I was new to customer service, and I still remember practicing Kim and Nancy’s profiles over and over again.
A major turning point for Paso was my connection with N id and later the DUNE showroom. Being able to share the same showroom as Building Block, a brand I had long admired was a truly special experience.
This collaboration was made possible through Ayako, with whom we also work at Paso, and I am sincerely grateful for this connection.

お互いを初めて知ったとき、どんな印象を持ちましたか？(お互いのブランドに魅力を感じたポイントはどこでしたか？)

What were your initial impressions of each other’s brands? What aspects did you find particularly compelling?

(BB) Ayumiの作品は、その繊細さとミニマルな美しさに惹かれました。どのピースからも、身体との関係性を丁寧に考えながらデザインされていることが伝わってきます。

 

Ayumi’s work caught our eye because of the subtlety and simplicity in her designs. You can tell each piece has been designed with care and consideration about how it relates to the body.

 

 

(Paso) Building Blockのプロダクトはいくつも所有しています。デザインへの向き合い方は徹底して引き算的でありながら、機能性に加え、遊び心やユニークさといった要素を必ずプラスしています。その難しさを軽やかに飛び越えてくるのが、Building Blockです。

 

I personally own several Building Block pieces. Their approach to design is deeply rooted in reduction, yet they always bring in elements of function, playfulness, and a unique character. It’s impressive how naturally they achieve this balance.

Wood Ball Keychain  / Ball ringを今回コラボレーションアイテムに選んだ理由を教えてください。

Why did you choose the Wood Ball Keychain and Ball Ring as the collaborative pieces?

(BB) 木製の球体のディテールは、これまでBuilding Blockのコレクションにおいて、バッグを遊び心のあるかたちで彩る要素としてたびたび登場してきました。Wood Ball Keychainは日常的に使えるキーチェーンでありながら、手首に通すとブレスレットのようにも見えるアイテムです。
バッグに付けた際にはオーナメントのように感じられるよう、マグネット式の留め具を採用し、まるで“バッグのためのジュエリー”のような存在になるようデザインしています。
今回のコラボレーションでは、このボールキーリングの持つ遊び心と球体のフォルムを軸に、それぞれのブランドを象徴するピースを組み合わせることに意味があると考えました。Building Blockを象徴するピースと、Pasoを象徴するピース、その両方の世界観を反映した構成になっています。

 

Wood sphere details have always shown up in Building Block collections as a playful way to adorn our bags. Our Wood Ball Keychain functions as an everyday keychain but also looks like a bracelet when placed around the wrist. We designed it to have a magnetic closure so that it feels like an ornament when hanging from a bag, almost like jewelry for your bag. We felt it would be meaningful for our collaboration to include pieces from both our worlds that reflect the playful and spherical form of the Ball Keychain–a piece representing Building Block, and a piece representing Paso.

 

 

(Paso) ボールモチーフのデザインは、これまでPasoでいくつも登場してきたデザインです。Pasoのシグネチャーである有機的なフォルムを最小限に削ぎ落とし、丁寧に描かれたドローイングの球体をイメージしています。今回コラボレーションとなるボールチェーンのプロダクトとも調和し、Building BlockとPasoの世界観を取り入れたアイテムとなりました。

 

The ball motif is a design that has appeared in many of Paso’s works over time. It reflects Paso’s signature organic forms, distilled to their essence and inspired by carefully drawn, almost hand-sketched spheres.
For this collaboration, it harmonizes with the ball chain product, resulting in a piece that brings together the visual languages of both Building Block and Paso.

このアイテムの制作段階で大変だった点、成功した点を教えてください。プロダクトとジュエリーと異なる領域を横断する中で、最も大切にしたことは何ですか？

During the process, what were the most challenging, and what felt most successful? As you crossed different disciplines as product design and jewelry what was most important to preserve?

(BB) 今回のコラボレーションは、最初からお互いの感性が自然に響き合い、とてもスムーズに進んだと感じています。Building Blockのデザインは、円・正方形・長方形といった基本的なフォルムを軸に展開されることが多く、それらは非常に正確で端正な印象を持っています。
そのため今回の課題は、Ayumiのジュエリーに見られるより有機的なフォルムと、私たちの確立されたデザイン言語をどのように融合させるかという点にありました。
新たなWood Ball Keychainでは、真鍮パーツがやわらかく、どこか可塑性を感じさせる形状を持つ一方で、漂白された木製の球体は非常に整った完璧なフォルムをしています。この対比がとても気に入っています。
また、Ayumiのピースにおいては、むしろその逆のアプローチとして、作家の手の痕跡を感じられる表現を大切にすることが重要だと考えました。

 

This collaboration felt really natural in that our sensibilities paired quite well from the start. Building Block designs often play off of a core shape – a circle, a square, or a rectangle. These forms are quite precise and formal, so our challenge was to find a way to marry Ayumi’s more organic form language found in her jewelry line with our established design language. We really love the fact that the brass component of the new Wood Ball Keychain has a soft, almost malleable form contrasted with the very perfect bleached wood spheres. We thought it was especially important for Ayumi’s piece to feel the opposite by celebrating the marks of an artist.

 

 

(Paso) 今回のコラボレーションでは、BUILDING BLOCKが大切にしているプロダクトのひとつであるウッドボールキーリングのマグネットパーツを、Pasoがジュエリーパーツとして製作させていただきました。たくさんの方に愛されているBuilding Blockのキーリング。
その大切な一部を担うことは、何よりも緊張感を伴う貴重な経験でした。新たな視野が広がる素晴らしい機会をありがとうございます。
マグネットのギミック部分といった明確な使用用途を持ち、ジュエリーより一回り大きなプロダクトに取り組むことはジュエリーブランドとしてあまり多く無い制作ですので、スケールの違いによる見え方の変化・表面の揺らぎのバランス・パーツの可動域や重量、安全性、接続パーツとの相性など、プロダクトとしての精度には非常に慎重に向き合いました。
Pasoの有機的な表現が強すぎるとBuilding Blockらしさが損なわれ、一方で正確に整いすぎた球体ではPasoらしさが失われてしまいます。そこで今回のキーリングパーツ及びボールリングは「ドローウィング」で丁寧に描いた球体をイメージしました。
リングは、Mサイズ（16個）、Sサイズ（15個）の球体が連なる構造です。
制作は、まるでドローウィングで描くように丁寧に手作業で制作を進めています。すべての球体はワックスクラフトによって一つずつ原型を制作しており、よく見ると 計31個すべての球体が異なるかたちを成しています。
手作業ゆえにわずかなズレが全体のバランスや比率に影響するため、何度も調整と作り直しを重ねる根気のいる工程でしたが、その分、両ブランドのバランスが取れた美しい仕上がりになったと感じています。​​​​
Kimと Nancyとはプロダクトに対して思う「価値観」や「方向性」に対する感性が非常に近かった事もあり、スムーズに・そして楽しく制作を進めることが出来ました。

 

For this collaboration, Paso had the opportunity to produce the magnetic component of Building Block’s Wood Ball Keychain—one of their signature products—as a jewelry element.As it is a piece loved by many, being entrusted with such an essential part was both a meaningful and nerve-wracking experience. We are truly grateful for this opportunity, which allowed us to expand our perspective.
Working on an object that has a clear functional mechanism, such as a magnetic closure, and at a slightly larger scale than typical jewelry, was relatively uncommon for us as a jewelry brand. We therefore approached the process with great care, paying close attention to aspects such as how scale affects perception, the balance of surface irregularities, the movement and weight of the parts, safety, and compatibility with connecting components.
If Paso’s organic expression became too strong, it could compromise the identity of Building Block; on the other hand, if the spheres were too perfectly uniform, it would lose Paso’s character.To find a balance, both the keychain component and the ball ring were inspired by spheres carefully drawn as if in a hand sketch.
The ring is composed of a sequence of spheres—16 for the M size and 15 for the S size. Each sphere was individually sculpted in wax by hand, resulting in a total of 31 spheres, all subtly different in form.
Because even slight variations can affect the overall balance and proportion, the process required patience, with many rounds of adjustments and remaking. However, we feel that this resulted in a beautiful outcome that reflects a balance between both brands.
We also found that Kim and Nancy share a very similar sensibility in terms of values and direction toward product design, which allowed the process to unfold smoothly and with great enjoyment.

今回のコラボレーションにおいてどちらのプロダクトにも共通する“球体”は象徴的な存在のように感じます。それぞれにとって、球体(Sphere)はどんな意味を持っていますか？

In this collaboration, the sphere feels like a symbolic presence shared by both products.
What does the sphere mean to each of you?

(BB) 私たちにとって球体は、「連続性」を象徴する存在です。2023年に一度立ち止まり、ブランドのあり方を見つめ直した後、今回のPasoとのコラボレーションは、再び創造的なエネルギーを前へと動かしていくための、小さくも確かな一歩のように感じています。
また球体は、調和のとれたかたちでもあり、ふたつのクリエイティブなプロジェクトがひとつに重なり合う、その結びつきを象徴しているようにも思います。

 

A sphere represents continuation for us. This is our first collaboration after taking some time to pause and readdress our business in 2023, so having this project with Paso feels like a nice little step towards moving our creative energy forward. The sphere also feels like a harmonious shape which represents a union of two creative projects coming together.

 

 

(Paso) 家族・仲間や友人・恋人、そして動植物や環境。その空間との関係性は、直接的な物質として捉えることのできない存在です。しかし、より良い関係性や調和のとれた状態は、「弧を描き、円となり、球体を成していく」イメージなのだと思っています。今回のコラボレーションにおいても、Building BlockとPaso、ジュエリーとプロダクトという垣根を越え、新たな調和（球体）が生まれたと感じています。

 

Relationships – with family, friends, partners, as well as with nature and our surroundings—are not something we can perceive as tangible matter.However, I feel that a harmonious and well-balanced state of these relationships can be imagined as something that begins as an arc, becomes a circle, and eventually forms a sphere.
In this collaboration as well, I feel that a new kind of harmony—a sphere—has emerged, transcending the boundaries between Building Block and Paso, and between jewelry and product design.

今回のWood Ball Keychain / Ball ringはどんな瞬間に使ってほしいですか？

In what kind of moments would you like people to use or wear  the Wood Ball Keychain and Ball Ring?

(BB) キーチェーンとリングは、日々の中で使ってもらいたいと考えているアイテムです。これらの二つのピースが、日常にささやかな喜びと、静かな贅沢を感じるひとときをもたらしてくれたら嬉しいです。

 

A keychain andring are everyday items that we hope people will use everyday. Our hope is that both pieces will bring joy and a moment of quiet luxury to one’s daily routine.

 

 

(Paso) 出かけるときに鍵をかけ、戻ったときに鍵を開ける。出かけるときにジュエリーを身につけ、戻ったときに外す。
日常の中で「内と外をつなぐもの／スイッチを切り替えるもの」として存在する、ふたつのアイテム。より充実した日常と空間へと想いを込めて、日々の豊かさをもたらすアクセントとしてお使いいただけたら嬉しいです。

 

Lock the door when you leave, unlock it when you return.Put on your jewelry as you step out, and take it off when you come home.
These two items exist in our daily lives as something that connects the inside and outside—a quiet switch that marks the transition between them.We hope they bring a sense of richness to your everyday life, serving as subtle accents that enhance both your time and your space.

今回のコラボレーションによって、感じたこと、得たものなどブランドの今後の展望も含めて教えてください。

Through this collaboration, what did you discover or felt?

(BB) 新たなコラボレーションのたびに、私たちは新しいことを学び、デザインの言語をさまざまな対象へと広げていく機会を得ています。
今回は、これまでのデザインをジュエリーのような、より小さく繊細で特別なスケールへと落とし込むことを考えるのがとても楽しいプロセスでした。
Ayumiとの制作も大変喜びに満ちたものであり、私たちはそれぞれのコラボレーションを、個人としての創造的な成長へとつながる大切なステップになったと思っています。

 

With each new collaboration, we have the opportunity to learn something new and expand our design language to other objects. In this case it was fun to think about our designs translated into a smaller, more precious scale like jewelry. It was a joy to work with Ayumi and so we appreciate each collaborative experience as a step towards personal creative growth.

 

 

(Paso) 楽しさと刺激と喜びと感動、、、たくさんの感情が一気に押し寄せたコラボレーションでした。この新たなプロジェクトを通して表現の可能性が広がると同時に​​​​​​​、​Kimと Nancyの視点から見えるPasoという存在を改めて知るような感覚がありました。それは、新たな道や視野がふと開かれるような体験です。
モノづくりに携われることに感謝し、今後もさまざまな経験と創造を重ねながら、制作を続けていきたいと思っています。ぜひ、また一緒にプロジェクトに取り組めることを楽しみにしています。

 

This collaboration brought a wave of emotions all at once—excitement, stimulation, joy, and deep inspiration.
Through this new project, we felt our possibilities for expression expand, while also gaining a renewed understanding of Paso as seen through the perspectives of Kim and Nancy. It was an experience that felt as though new paths and ways of seeing quietly opened before us.
We are truly grateful to be involved in the process of making, and we hope to continue creating while embracing new experiences and explorations along the way.
